Debunking 3D Printing Myths: The Benefits of PLA Filament

In recent years, 3D printing has become a go-to method in manufacturing items, from toys and prototypes to home decor and medical devices. As the owner of a 3D printing business I’m often asked:

Aren’t 3D printed products plastic?  My answer: Not in the traditional sense!

Most 3D printing enthusiasts and professionals are now building products using PLA, or polylactic acid, filament.  Unlike petroleum-based plastics, PLA is derived from renewable resources such as cornstarch, sugarcane or sugar-beet pulp.

Where conventional, petroleum-based plastics contribute to environmental degradation and pollution, PLA offers a path toward environmentally-conscious manufacturing.

3D prints from PLA are eco-friendly and sustainable!

Unlike traditional plastics, which can take hundreds of years to decompose and often end up in landfills or oceans, causing significant environmental harm, PLA is compostable under the right industrial conditions. This means that once items made from PLA reach the end of their life cycle, they can break down naturally, returning to the earth without leaving behind lasting pollutants.

Is it safe for humans?  YES!

PLA products are non-toxic, safe for both children and adults.

One of the greatest concerns people have regarding plastics is the presence of harmful chemicals such as bisphenol (BPA) and phthalates. These substances have been linked to various health issues, particularly when it comes to the safety of children’s toys and everyday items.  PLA is both BPA and phthalates free.

PLA also requires less energy to produce compared to traditional plastics, which helps reduce the overall carbon footprint of manufacturing.

Another important aspect to consider is the energy consumption associated with 3D printing using PLA filament. As we become more environmentally conscious as a society, opting for materials like PLA is a step in the right direction toward sustainable practices.

As we advocate for cleaner and greener materials in the manufacturing industry, it’s essential to spread awareness around the benefits of 3D printing with PLA filament. By doing so, we can change the narrative that equates all 3D printed items with harmful plastic. As consumers become more informed and empowered, they can make choices that support sustainability and health.

In conclusion, while there are valid concerns about the impact of plastics on our health and the environment, not all materials are created equal.

3D Printing with PLA filament stands out as a renewable, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic.

Embracing this technology and understanding its benefits can lead to innovative, safe, and sustainable products that prioritize our health and the well-being of our planet.

At 3D Layer Labs we use premium PLA from Bambu Lab in our small batch prints.
